After a month of constant travel (Leon, San Luis Potosi, Costa Rica and Oaxaca), I decided to treat myself to a non-work related excursion (sponsored by the Embassy) to Valle de Bravo. Since I arrived to Mexico, everyone has told me how I MUST go see the annual migration of monarch butterflies...Needless to say, I was not disappointed. It was truly a spectacular sight!
I was joined by my colleague, Shannon, as we ventured into the wilderness about 2 hours away from Mexico City. We climbed high into the forest (s0me preferred to ride horses) before even catching a glimpse of the fluttering creatures. Once we reached our final destination, we were surrounded by thousands of them! (It looks like leaves on the trees in the photo below, but they are actually all butterflies!) A magical mariposa moment, to say the least.
We had our lunch along the beautiful lake in Valle de Bravo and also stopped in Toluca to see the Botanic Gardens with its impressive stained-glass windows. All in all, a very good day.
Trying to take advantage of all this amazing country has to offer before my time here runs out...
